The Entry of Christ into Disneyworld as Caryl
Chessman swings above the Crowd and Randolph Scott Shows Customers to Their Seats
46 ½ x 50, oil on canvas, 2001
Each Friday thousands of families strap their infant children
into safety board approved car seats and drive hundreds of miles to this strange place
called Disneyworld, to show them mythical objects and dramas. They are guaranteed never to
be harmed in any way. Nothing is real. The idea of no risk carries an opposing no
reward payoff that is ignored. Everything is just like on Television. There is
something happening in our society and we have absolutely no idea what it is and how it
came about. Is anyone writing this stuff down? This picture plays with those occurrences.
Christ is led, vulnerable, into Jerusalem knowing full well what
awaits him. The crowd cheers. Caryl Chessman, known as the Redlight rapist of the fifties
in San Francisco, swings above the crowd taunting them for their stupidity and Randolph
Scott; star of countless cowboy westerns, placidly but attractively ushers viewers to
their seats.
