Clowns of War
65" x 195", oil on canvas

There are pilots with their feet sticking out the bottoms of their planes, there are sailors carrying their ships and in the middle panel there is Pontius Pilot washing his hands of the decision to crucify Jesus. What does all of this mean? Is it anti war? Or, does it illustrate the stupidity of war and violence? If you look closely you will see the politicians in their business suits directing the imaginary battle. Everyone seems to marching in lock step to some imaginary tune. The soldiers don’t seem to be aggressive or angry but rather resigned to this group ridiculousness’. There are flags proclaiming the stupidity of war and its narcotic effect on our human nature as it seems to give us a group identity. War provides us with focus, all of us together against a common foe. The idea being that our individual IQ’s diminish as more of us congregate in one place or behind one cause.
